9 Ways to Protect Your Computer

It is important to protect your devices, yourself. and your information from fraudsters and identity theft. If not protected, you could allow access to your personal information and your identity.

Today, spammers have the ability to use YOUR computer for what is called a “zombie drone” to send spam to others and make it look like it came from you.

Spyware and malicious viruses can be attached onto your computer either completely destroying your files, or at least, significantly slowing it down.

By implementing good security habits and routine safety measures, you are in a much better position to protect your family, yourself, and your information.

The following tips will help you lower your online risk!

Don’t click unknown or suspicious emails and attachments and be cautious about the information you share. Nefarious websites and individuals who steal data can deceive you into giving them personal data. Practice safe web browsing.

Webcams can be hijacked and turned on remotely without your knowledge. Others can illegally listen to, or see you. It is good practice to turn them off when not being used.

Keep your antivirus software up to date. Don’t ignore the prompts for updates. Ensure that you download the recommended updates from the manufacturer of your device especially antivirus and antispyware.

If you use public computers, avoid inputting sensitive information. Library and internet cafe computers are not private and often have a record of your keystrokes. Refrain from using the computer feature that will automatically sign you in to your email. Do not choose remember password.

Keep your antivirus software up to date. Back up and update your computer system regularly. Microsoft offers a Windows Update for updates on Windows Operating System, Outlook Express and Internet Explorer.
